Item: Downy Phlox
Price: $2.75

This perennial wildflower has 5 petal, pastel variagated blooms rather than the vivid colors of its cousin, the annual Phlox drummondii. P pilosa enjoys a hot, dry site with poor sandy soil. It may also be found along ditches and at the edges of other wet areas. It reseeds and adapts well to roadside mowing in Bahia grass. Colonies can become robust and large. A minimal planting method suggests to thin turf, broadcast seeds over area, rake or drag to make contact with soil. Water occasionally until sprouted. Net weight: 15 mg. Packet will seed 100 sq ft. Sow in fall or spring. This is a Florida native wildflower and north Florida ecotype. This seed is rare in that Florida native Phlox pilosa seed is not known to be available commercially except through the Salter Tree and Herb Farm. While Phlox pilosa is not considered rare in the wild in Florida, plants are hard to find in the Florida horticultural industry and many of the plants for purchase are not a Florida ecotype.
